Vision
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is a large city of over 5 million people. Like many metropolitan cities around the world it offers its residents many opportunities to expand their horizons. There is an abundance of public and private schools one can attend. For those affluent enough to take advantage, their children can explore music and dance, swimming or karate, schools that offer culinary, nursing or veterinary training. The young people of Addis Ababa are only limited by the financial hardship many of these programs place on lower middle class and poor families, and the dismissive attitude the adults in their lives may have towards activities that may seem frivolous. Ethiopian Benefactors Society Inc. understanding the benefits of extracurricular activities and education, wants to allow the young people of Addis Ababa to dream big and explore new areas of learning, with our unwavering support whether they succeed or fail in their endeavors. In the end we hope to be a wise and benevolent but firm guide that brings to fruition well rounded adults that can do the same for their own children.
Program
Our volunteers identify young people with the desire to experience and learn things outside of their daily norm, things that may change the course of their lives. Ethiopian Benefactors Society Inc. will ensure that all of our beneficiaries have a steady foundation (i.e. food, clothes, shelter, and basic schooling) whether through their parents or a secondary source, before exploring the deeper vision these young persons have for themselves and their future. Our beneficiaries will be encouraged to excel at whatever endeavor they desire. Their progress will be tracked and reported regularly to all benefactors.
Update: EBS Adult Vocational Program:
In our efforts to give the young people of Addis Ababa the ability to dream big about their future and attain the knowledge and confidence to fulfill those dreams, we have found that there are many hard working young adults that with a little support, and a skill or trade, can market themselves better to employers and build better careers that may change the course of their lives. Therefore, we have begun to implement the EBS Adult Vocational Program to give young adults a second chance at obtaining the knowledge and skill set necessary to succeed in the modern world.
Update II: EBS Elementary:
As we continue to help young people get the schooling they need to be successful and self-sufficient adults, we have found that many do not have the educational background upon which to build towards their dream careers. Many fields are not attainable to them due to the lack of proper elementary education. Therefore, we are implementing EBS Elementary to support the youngest students, in the earliest years, and hopefully see them through their university careers.
EBS Health
EBS Health is a new initiative that we at Ethiopian Benefactors Society Inc. believe is essential in the development of our beneficiaries. Our goal with EBS Health is to give access to private primary care doctors to all of our past, present, and future beneficiaries. Although there are free clinics and hospitals throughout Addis Ababa, the private clinics are able to give a more prompt and comprehensive service due to their relatively small amount of patients and larger staffs. Doctor visits cost an average of 70Birr ($4), with individual procedures being charged separately.
In our efforts to fulfill our mission of "giving the young people of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia the emotional and financial support they need to dream big about life and fulfill those dreams," we have come to realize that a healthy mind is for not, if not accompanied by a healthy body. With the help of our benefactors and subscribers our beneficiaries will have the peace that comes with the attainment of both a healthy mind and body.
Our volunteers will begin to implement the EBS Health program in the summer of 2011.

Beneficiary: Ayenalem
Ayenalem has never attended a real school and started working as a maid at the age of 12. Her past employers promised to enroll her in school but none ever did. Luckily Ayenalem's most recent employer has agreed to give her the time she needs to attend classes and study.
Ayenalem is eager to get her education and a recent experience with taking care of her older sister's terminally ill newborn baby has made her want to be a doctor.
EBS Inc. will enroll Ayenalem in the 1st grade at an evening program at the local elementary school at a cost of 29Birr ($1.53) a month. This will be the first step in Ayenalem's journey to make a better future for herself.
Beneficiary: Zelalem
EBS Inc. will give financial backing to Zelalem's dreams in the amount of 400Birr ($22) a month that he can use for books, photocopies, internet access, and the occasional meal out. EBS Inc. will also make ourselves available in case any unforeseen expenses arise during Zelalem's time in medical school.
Beneficiary: Bilen
EBS Inc. will enroll Bilen in a 3 year diploma program in Nursing at Kidest Lideta Health College at a cost of 400Birr ($22) a month. EBS Inc. will also cover any school material and transportation costs Bilen may incur.
Beneficary: Abebe
EBS Inc. will enroll Abebe in St. Paul Spiritual College to study Theology and Church Management at a cost of 170Birr ($9) a month with a 350Birr ($19) quarterly book fee.
Beneficiary: Bizuwork
Bizuwork never got passed the 8th grade but hope to one day be able to learn a trade that will allow her to find better employment, which in turn mean a better quality of life.
EBS Inc. will enroll Bizuwork in a year long intensive Chef training program at Bienvenido Cooking and Language Training Center at a cost of 400Birr ($22) a month. EBS Inc. will also cover any supply, uniform, or material costs associated with Bizuwork's training.
Beneficiary: Yerusalem B.
Yerusalem is a 4 year old little girl who lives in the Kazanchis neighborhood of Addis Ababa with her mother, 23 year old, Kidist. Yerusalem and her mother live in a small room that costs 250Birr ($14) a month that Kidist pays for by taking in laundry and doing housekeeping in the neighborhood. Yerusalem's father does not support her or her mother in any way. Yerusalem's mother, a child of poor farmers from a town called Menagesha, came to the capital city at the age of 8 to live with her grandmother, who passed away a few years later leaving Kidist to live on her own ever since. Yerusalem's mother tried entering her into Nursery school last year at a cost of 100Birr ($6) a month but had to withdraw her after nine months due to the financial strain. Yerusalem's mother is a hardworking young woman that wants the best for her little girl and she believes she can only get it through a good education.EBS Inc. will enroll Yerusalem in Pre-K at St. Gabriel Elementary School at a cost of 210Birr ($12) a month, beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover the costs of Yerusalems's healthcare, transportation and school supply costs.
Beneficiary: Elani
Elani is a 6 year old little girl from an area of Ethiopia called Sidamo. She came to live with her uncle in the capital city of Addis Ababa when she was 4 years old. Elani is the seventh of eight children. Her mother has a mental illness that doesn't allow her to take proper care of her children. Elani's father is a coffee farmer with a small plot of land that also contracts himself out to other farms when he can. Elani's uncle takes good care of her but can only offer her the basics, but with the right support she can make the separation from her parents and siblings worthwhile in the long run.EBS Inc. will enroll Elani in Pre-K at Holy Savior Elementary School at a cost of 380Birr ($21) a month, beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover the costs of Elani's school supplies, transportation, and healthcare costs.
Beneficiary: Tsegazeab
Tsegazeab is a 5 year old little boy from the Gullele area of Addis Ababa that recently lost his mother to cancer. His father struggles to take care of Tsegazeab and his two older sisters Yemariam and Radiate on his modest income as a security guard. Tsegazeab's father doesn't know how he can manage the day to day costs of putting all three children through school without their mother's support and although he wants them all to receive the best education possible he feels that he may have no choice but to send all three children to the countryside to live with relatives. Tsegazeab and his sisters want to stay home with their father and rebuild their lives after the tragic loss of their mother.EBS Inc. will enroll Tsegazeab in Pre-K at Holy Savior Elementary School at a cost of 380Birr ($21) a month, beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover the costs of Tsegazeab's healthcare, traansportation and school supply costs.
Beneficiary: Radiate
Radiate is a 9 year old young girl from the Gullele area of Addis Ababa. Radiate's mother passed away a few months ago of cancer and she lives with her father and two siblings, Yemariam and Tsegazeab. Her father, a security guard, is struggling to support all three of his children on his own and although he wants them to receive the best education possible he is considering sending them to the countryside to live with relatives. Radiate, a very good student, does not want to have her education interrupted and would like to go to a better school where she will be even more challenged.EBS Inc. will enroll Radiate in Holy Savior Elementary School at a cost of 480Birr ($27) a month, starting in her 5th grade year beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover Radiate's healthcare, transportation, and school supply costs.
Beneficiary: Yemariam
Yemariam is an 11 year old young girl who lives in the Gullele area of Addis Ababa with her father and two younger siblings, Radiate and Tsegazeab. Yemariam's mother passed away a few months ago of cancer and her father who is a security guard in the neighborhood has been struggling to take care of his three children. Although their father wants Yemariam and her siblings to have the best possible education, the financial burden of putting three children through school is too much for him and he is considering sending the children to the countryside to live with relatives. Yemariam has already missed a lot of school while taking care of her sick mother and is worried about falling even further behind.EBS Inc. will enroll Yemariam in Holy Savior Elementary School at a cost of 480Birr ($27) a month, starting in her 5th grade year beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover Yemariam's school supplies, transportation and healthcare costs.
Beneficiary: Bruktawit
Bruktawit is a 6 year old little girl who is in kindergarten. Her father repairs small electronics and her mother is a housewife. Bruktawit's parents entered her into private school last year but due to recent financial hardships will have to withdraw her this school year. Bruktawit's parents understand the importance of early education but just could not keep up with the costs.EBS Inc. will pay for Bruktawit to continue her education at Hopeland Academy at a cost of 260Birr ($15) a month, starting with her final year of Kindergarten beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover Bruktawit's transpotation, school supplies, and healthcare costs.
Beneficiary: Yared T.
Yared is an 11 year old boy who is the younger half brother of recent EBS nursing graduate Belaynesh. Yared's mother has passed away and he was being raised by his grandmother until her recent illness. Yared is now living with his father who is an alcoholic and very abusive. Yared's adult sister Belaynesh is desperately looking for a place where they can live so she can take him out of that environment. In the meantime, Belaynesh would like for Yared to attend private school and get the educational foundation he needs to one day change his circumstances.EBS Inc. will enroll Yared in St. Micheal's Academy at a cost of 400Birr ($22) a month, starting in his 6th grade year beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover the costs of Yared's transportation, school supplies, and healthcare.
Beneficiary: Daniel
Daniel is a 3 year old boy from the Gullele area of Addis Ababa. He lives with his mother and older brother Kalab. Daniel's father passed away a year ago and his mother is struggling to take care of her two boys alone. Without his father's income as a real estate broker Daniel's mother, who took a job as a nanny, can not put him into a good school.EBS Inc. will enroll Daniel into Holy Savior Elementary School, alongside his older brother kalab, for Pre-K at a cost of 380Birr ($21) a month, beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover Daniel's healthcare, school supply and transportation costs.
Beneficiary: Kalab
Kalab is an 11 year old boy from the Gullele area of Addis Ababa. Kalab lives with his mother and 3 year old brother Daniel. Kalab's father, who was a real estate broker, passed away a year ago and his mother, who was a housewife, has had to take a job as a nanny to raise her two boys. Etsegenet is a 17 year old young lady from the Gullele area of Addis Ababa. Her mother passed away when Etsegenet was only 2 years old and she was sent to live with an aunt. At the age of 6 Etsegenet returned to live with her father and his new wife. Etsegenet's step-mother treated her badly for many years and she has just recently moved in with another aunt. Etsegenet finished the 10th grade with good grades and would like to study nursing, a field she believes will allow her a good career.EBS Inc. will enroll Etsegenet in a 3 year Nursing diploma program at Kidest Giorgis Health College at a cost of 300Birr ($17) a month, beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover Etsegenet's healthcare, school supply, and transportation cost for the duration of her studies.
Beneficiary: Nitsu
Nitsu is a 24 year old young lady from the Kolfe neighborhood of Addis Ababa. Her father has passed away and she lives with her mother and younger sister. Nitsu's mother, who gets ill often, raised the the two girls with the help of family members. Nitsu also has issues with headaches and stomach ailments related to the stress of watching her mother struggle. These experiences have made Nitsu want to be a doctor. Nitsu finished the 10th grade but didn't get the placement results to continue on to the medical field and can not afford to enter private school to study nursing, her second choice.EBS Inc. will enroll Nitsu in a 3 year Nursing diploma program at Kidest Lideta Health College at a cost of 350Birr ($20) a month, beginning in September 2012. EBS will also cover Nitsu's transportation, school supply, and healthcare costs for the duration of her studies.
Beneficiary: Ashenafi
Ashenafi is 28 years old and live in the Gullele area of Addis Ababa with his older brother. Ashenafi's mother passed away when he and his siblings were very young and his father soon after left and remarried. Their father hired a nanny to take care of the children and supplied them their basic needs. Ashenafi left school in the 10th grade and has not been able to learn a trade to the costs associated with doing so. Ashenafi would like to learn ceramic tiling as the building boom throughout Ethiopia offers many employment opportunities.EBS Inc. will enroll Ashenafi in a six month Ceramic Tiling certification program with Soda Technical Training and Building Contractors, beginning in September 2012, at a cost of 350Birr ($20) a month. Ashenafi will also receive funds to cover transportation, supply and healthcare cost for the duration of the program.
Beneficiary: Yerusalem S.
Yerusalem is a 20 year old young lady who lives in the Kebena area of Addis Ababa with her parents, grandmother and 4 sisters. She comes from a modest family but had the support she needed and the grades required to graduate from the 12th grade. Yerusalem has been waiting for months now to take the placement exams that will determine what she will study and where in the public school system or allow her to enter a private college. She would like to study Accounting and enter a private school so she can have more control over the direction of her education. Yerusalem would also like to take a language course to better her English as she feels it would better her chances in her future college and work environments.EBS Inc. will enroll Yerusalem in a short term English language program at Promising Language Academy at a cost of 333Birr ($19) a month, beginning in August 2012. Yerusalem will also be able to enroll in the accounting program of her choice as soon as the opportunity to do so arises.
Beneficiary: Befikadu
Befikadu is 28 years old and lives in the Saris neighborhood of Addis Ababa with his wife and 6 year old daughter. Befikadu's father passed away when he was young and his mother raised him and his two siblings alone. The financial hardship on his mother forced him to drop out of school and take a job as a waiter. There he met his current wife and they worked side by side until she starting becoming ill. Befikadu later quit his job over the working conditions and began shining shoes to support his family. Befikadu would like to learn a trade that he can use to earn a better living and has chosen Mobile Phone Maintenance, as those skills are in high demand.EBS Inc. will enroll Befikadu in Satcom Technology Institute for a 3 month course in Mobile Phone Maintenance at a cost of 300Birr ($17) a month, beginning in August of 2012. Befikadu will also receive transportation and supply cost for the duration of the course.
Beneficiary: Genet A.
Genet is a 22 year old young lady born in the Aleltu, Debre Brehan area of Ethiopia. Her mother passed away when Genet was only 2 years old and she does not know her father. Genet was then taken to the capital city of Addis Ababa to live with her grandmother who passed away by the time Genet was 10 years old. Genet then went to live with her aunt who was very abusive and at the age of 16, with only a 6th grade education, went out on her own. Genet worked in bars washing glasses and later as a live-in maid. A boyfriend who frequented one of the bars Genet worked at had gotten her pregnant and left her as soon as he found out, and when her employers where Genet worked as a maid found out about her pregnancy they asked her to leave also.
Genet then found a home for pregnant girls, where she could live and safely have her baby, but only on the condition that she agree to give the baby up for adoption. Without many options, Genet signed the contract and stayed in the home until her baby was 1 year old. When it was time to give up the child Genet refused and left with her son without a place to go. She found another group home for girls that bent their rules to allow her to stay there with her baby.
Genet would now like to start a new life for herself and her child by learning to be a Chef. EBS Inc. will enroll Genet in Beinvenido Cooking and Language Training Center for a 10 month intensive Chef training program, beginning in July 2012, at a cost of 430Birr ($24) a month. EBS Inc. will also pay for Genet's transportation, school supply, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Ahailushem
Ahailushem is a 25 year old young woman from the Bambis neighborhood of Addis Ababa. At six months old, Ahailushem's aunt took her in to help her parents who already had 7 other children. Life wasn't too bad for Ahailushem until at the age of 18, she found herself alone as her aunt and both parents had passed away. Barely knowing her siblings and not having anywhere to turn, Ahailushem began to live on the streets.
Three years ago Ahailushem got pregnant and had a little girl, who a neighbor that rents a room next to hers helps her with. Ahailushem, who only went to school until the 6th grade, would like to study to be a Chef so she can create a better life for herself and her daughter.
EBS Inc. will enroll Ahailushem in Beinvenido Cooking and Language Training Center for an intensive 10 month Chef training program at a cost of 430Birr ($24) a month, beginning in July of 2012. EBS Inc. will also cover Ahailushem's transportation, school supply, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Tigist A.
Tigist is a 25 year old young lady who was born in an area of Ethiopian called Hosana. Her mother passed away when Tigist was 15 years old, leaving her farmer father to raise Tigist and her three siblings alone. Tigist's uncle brought her to the capital city of Addis Ababa so she can begin her elementary education but her uncle's wife was only interested in using Tigist as a maid and only enrolled her in part-time night school. After a few years of ill treatment and verbal abuse and only reaching the 3rd grade, Tigist ran away. For the past five years, Tigist has been living from place to place, doing whatever she can to survive. Finally being able to rent a room for herself and her younger sister, who she wanted better for but who has recently gone missing.Tigist is desperate to make a change and bring stability to her life. She would like to learn to be a Chef and in the future finish her elementary education.
EBS Inc. will enroll Tigist in Beinvenido Cooking and Language Training Center for a 10 month intensive Chef training program at a cost of 430Birr ($24) a month, beginning in July of 2012. EBS Inc. will also cover Tigist's transportation, supply, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Yewubdar
Yewubdar is a 21 year old young woman who was born in an area of Ethiopia called Holeta Ghenet. Her parents had six other children and when Yewubdar was 5 years old her grandfather, in the capital city of Addis Ababa, offered to take her in and educate her. Things were going fine for Yewubdar until her grandfather passed away and she was sent to live with her uncle and his family. She immediately clashed with her uncle and cousins and when at 17 years old Yewubdar met a boy from the university that offered to rent a room for the two of them to live, she left home for good. Yewubdar got pregnant and gave birth right when her boyfriend was graduating college. He got a job in another city and left Yewubdar and their son and cut off all communication with them. Not being able to care for her son alone, Yewubdar took the child to her hometown of Holeta Ghenet and left him with her father.
Yewubdar would like to take this opportunity to learn to be a chef, so that she can take care of herself, go back and finish high school and eventually open her own restaurant.

Beneficiary: Hymanot S.
Hymanot is a 25 year old young lady who was born in an area of Ethiopia called Menz, where her parents still live. Hymanot is the youngest of 13 children and was brought to the capital city of Addis Ababa by her oldest sister when she was only 3 years old. All of Hymanot's siblings live in Addis Ababa and have started their own families. After many years of being treated badly by her sister and used as a servant, Hymanot ran away. At the age of 17, Hymanot found herself homeless and alone with only an 8th grade education and no way to provide for herself.
Hymanot now lives in a group home and shelter for girls and does whatever she can to earn money. She dreams of having a career with which she can take care of herself and her elderly parents.
EBS Inc. will enroll Hymanot in Beinvenido Cooking and Language Training Center for a 10 month intensive cooking program, beginning in July of 2012, at a cost of 430Birr ($24) a month. EBS Inc. will also cover Hymanot's transportation, school supplies, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Hymanot K.
Hymanot is a 26 year old young woman who was born in a small town called Chancho Muketuri in Ethiopia. Her mother was a local woman in the small town and her father had come from the capital city of Addis Ababa for work. From the time her parents married her father's family complained about his choice in staying in that small town and marrying a local girl. When Hymanot was 8 years old her father left her mother and took her to live with him in the capital city. Her father remarried and had three other children and Hymanot was treated very badly by her step-mother. After many years of abuse Hymanot decided to leave home but by then her biological mother had passed away. Hymanot ended up homeless, sleeping outdoors and begging for food.
Hymanot is now lucky to have a place to stay in a small shelter for girls but is desperate to find a way to make a major change in her life. She believes that by studying to be a chef she can find employment and eventually start her own restaurant where she can help other girls like herself.
EBS Inc. will enroll Hymanot in Beinvenido Cooking and Language Training Center for an intensive 10 month cooking program, beginning in July of 2012, at a cost of 430Birr ($24) a month. EBS Inc. will also pay for Hymanot's transportation, school supplies, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Abraham
Abraham is a 28 year old man from the Gullele area of Addis Ababa. Abraham lives with his wife and 1 year old baby. He works as a police officer making 500Birr ($28) a month and his wife works as a hair stylist making 600Birr ($34). Their 800Birr ($45) a month rent, which was already a major strain on their budget, is now being raised to 1500Birr ($85) and other suitable rooms are just as expensive. Abraham and his wife feel like the only way to make it financially is for Abraham to take Hair Styling courses and use a government micro-loan to start their own salon. With both of them working side by side, with no other salaries to pay they believe their little family can thrive.
EBS Inc. will enroll Abraham in Kagnaw Hair and Beauty school at a cost of 330Birr ($19) a month for 10 months, beginning in June of 2012.
Beneficiary: Bethlehem
Bethlehem is a 21 year old young lady who was born in the town of Shashemane in Ethiopia. Bethlehem's mother passed away and her father later remarried a woman who resented Bethlehem and treated her and her younger sister very cruelly. At the age of 17, Bethlehem ran away, to try to spare her little sister beatings by their step-mother, and to live on her own in the capital city of Addis Ababa. She washed dishes and waited tables, all the while breaking a bunch of glasses and plates, which came out of her salary.
Bethlehem would like to learn Videography and Video Editing and use her education to help her sister in Sashemane and other girls who are struggling to make it on their own.
EBS Inc. will enroll Bethlehem into Master Video and Photo Training Center for a 1 year certificate program at a cost of 300Birr ($17) a month beginning in June 2012. EBS Inc. will also cover Bethlehem's transportation, school supply, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Ekram
Ekram is a 16 year old young girl, born and raised in the Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa. Ekram's parents have both passed away and she and her younger brother had been living with their uncle until Ekram met a man who told her he was a doctor and invited her to live with him in the capital city of Addis Ababa as his girlfriend. Ekram dropped out of school and left home to be with this man who after a few months of living together, ended the relationship and took Ekram back to Dire Dawa. Ekram found her way back to Addis Ababa to find this man who she believed loved her and ended up wandering the streets and homeless. Ekram has been doing anything she can to survive ever since and has now at least found a group home for girls where she can live.
Ekram refuses to return to her family in Dire Dawa and wants to go back to school in Addis Ababa but knows she needs a way to support herself. She would like to learn Hair Styling and hopefully find a job that will allow her to attend school in the evenings.
EBS Inc. will enroll Ekram into Lovely Beauty School for a 10 month intensive hair styling course at a cost of 290Birr ($17) a month beginning in June 2012. EBS will also cover Ekram's transportation, school supplies, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Tigist B.
Tigist B. is a 21 year old young lady from Harar in the east of Ethiopia. At the age of 13 she left her family and 5 siblings to go live with her grandmother in the capital city of Addis Ababa. After a contentious few years Tigist ran away from home over a seemingly minor argument over her use of the phone. At the time, Tigist dropped out of the 8th grade and lived from place to place doing whatever she could to earn money and take care of herself. Tigist would like to take this opportunity to change her life by learning a trade that she can use to start a career.EBS Inc. will enroll Tigist in Lovely Beauty School for a 10 month Hair Styling course at a cost of 290Birr ($17) a month beginning in June of 2012. EBS Inc. will also pay for transportation, school supplies, and health care costs.
Beneficiary: Frehiwot
Frehiwot is a 21 year old young women who was born in the Ethiopian city of Gondar, to day laborers who had two other girls and a boy. When Frehiwot was 9 years old an aunt in the capital city of Addis Ababa offered to take her in and educate her but did not enter her into school for two years. She used Frehiwot as an unpaid servant and treated her very badly. When Frehiwot was finally enrolled in elementary school it was only at night and she was expected to work as a maid in the house all day. She would return from school every night and be verbally abused by her aunt. At age 14, Frehiwot took a bus across town and begged security guards at a church to let her sleep in the compound. After the third night Frehiwot left the church compound and told her story to a woman she met on the street. The woman found Frehiwot a job washing dishes at a small cafe which also allowed her to sleep there. After six months of not making any money, mostly due to breaking too many glasses, Frehiwot left the cafe and has been living from place to place ever since.Frehiwot only went to school up to the 6th grade but believes that with the right training she can get a good job, her own home, and finally go back to school and finish her education. Frehiwot wants to enroll into Lovely Beauty School for a 10 month intensive Hair Styling program at a cost of 290Birr ($17) a month. EBS Inc., beginning in June 2012, will cover the full cost of Frehiwot's education as well as her supply and transportation costs.
Beneficiary: Alemaddis
Alemaddis has already completed a three year Diploma program in Nursing and is looking for work but would like to continue on to get her Degree, which is essential to obtaining employment.
EBS Inc. will cover Alemaddis' tuition cost of 565Birr ($32) a month for a 3 year Degree program in Nursing at Central University Health College beginning in May 2012. EBS will also pay for Alemaddis' transportation, photocopy, supply, and healthcare costs.
Beneficiary: Girma
Now in his second year Girma is struggling with keeping up with the costs associated with school, such as photocopying and transportation. Girma tutors high school children to cover these costs and was able to struggle through but now has an extra burden due to his father falling ill and being bed-ridden. Girma goes to school, then tutors his students, then rushes home to feed and take care of his father. Leaving him no time to study thus causing his grades to suffer.
EBS Inc. will support Girma with a monthly stipend of 350Birr ($20) a month beginning in April 2012 to help him cover his transportation and photocopying costs, which should alleviate some of his financial burden and allow him to focus more on his education.
Beneficiary: Haimanot
Haimanot would like help getting her Nursing Degree so that she can live independently and help support her family. EBS Inc., beginning in March 2012 will enter Haimanot in Central Health and Science College for a three year Degree program in Nursing at a cost of 565Birr ($32) a month. EBS will also cover Haimanot's transportation, supply, and healthcare costs.
Beneficiary: Selamawit K.
EBS Inc. will cover the cost of Selamawit's tuition at Menelik Hospital Science College beginning in March 2012 at a cost of 235Birr ($13) a month. EBS will also cover Selamwit's transportation, supply, and healthcare costs while she is attending school.
Beneficiary: Lyna
Lyna is the 28 year old older sister of EBS Beneficiary Lidya. She lives in the Ras Mekonnen Dildi area of Addis Ababa with her parents, two sisters and brother. Both of her parents are unemployed, with her mother being bed ridden with a serious illness. Lyna has finished high school through the 12th grade but could not continue her education due to financial restraints. She would now like to finally pursue a career path that she has always been interested in, which is working with computers.
EBS Inc. will start Lyna off in the computer field by enrolling her in a basic computer and language course at BA Computer Training Center at a cost of 280Birr ($16) a month starting in February 2012. Lyna has chosen to take evening courses so she can stay home with her mother during the day. Lyna's transportation and other school related expenses will also be covered for her by EBS.
Beneficiary: Tinsae
Tinsae is a 19 year old young lady who lives in the Degach Wube neighborhood of Addis Ababa, with her grandparents. Her father works as a security guard and her mother has passed away. Tinsae has always done well in school and has finished through the 12th grade. She would like an opportunity to study Accounting, a field that she enjoys and feels will enable her to find steady employment.EBS Inc. will enroll Tinsae into CPU College, beginning in January of 2012, for a three year degree program in Accounting at a cost of 130Birr ($8) a month. Half of Tinsae's tuition will be taken care of by a local government grant program for underprivileged young people. EBS will also furnish Tinsae with funds to cover her transportation and other school costs.
Beneficiary: Taye
Taye is 20 years old and lives in the Kotebe area of Addis Ababa with his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. His father is a day laborer and his mother sells firewood in the market. He only attended school until the 10th grade as his family could not afford to pay for him to continue, even though he had the grades and placement exam results to do so. Taye's past grades give him the option to study many different fields and he has chosen to go into Dentistry.EBS Inc. will enroll Taye into Atlas Health and Science College at a cost of 675Birr ($39) a month for a three year Dentistry program. Taye will also receive funds to cover school supplies, transportation, and health care through the EBS Health Program.
Beneficiary: Tedros A
Tedros is a 20 year old from the Francia area of Addis Ababa. He lives with his father and brother. His father supports them by working as a security guard. Tedros finished high school and was allotted a spot in the university to study IT, but he could not afford to go. He would like to take this opportunity to study Cooking and Restaurant Management as he feels it will allow him to find good employment.
EBS Inc. will enroll Tedros into a one year program in Ibex Hotel and Tourism Management College at a cost of 385Birr ($22) a month, beginning in December 2011. He will also receive funds for school materials and transportation costs.
Beneficiaries: Nahom and Dagen (EBS Elementary)
Nahom and Dagen are 10 and 8 year old brothers who live in the Kebena area of Addis Ababa with their grandmother. Their father is unemployed and their mother left the country 3 years earlier to find employment but has not been heard from since. Their grandmother supports them with income she receives by renting out a small room in their home. Nahom, 10 years old, is now in the 4th grade and Dagen, 8 years old, is in the 1st. Their grandmother wants them to get the best education possible so they will be able to change their circumstances in the future.
EBS Inc., as part of our EBS Elementary program, will enroll Dagen and Nahom into a local private school beginning in October of 2011 at a cost of 210Birr ($12) a month each. Both will also receive funds to cover all their educational needs so they can focus on their schooling. We will follow their progress closely and try to guide and support them to reach educational excellence and a bright future.

Kidist is 16 years old and lives in the Asko area of Addis Ababa with her 24 year old sister. Both of her parents are deceased. The two sisters live off their mother's small pension. Kidist would like to get her degree in accounting but she did not receive a good grade in her 10th grade placement exam. Kidist would like to take the placement exam again and would like help paying for a preparatory course to make sure she gets the best grade possible. Accounting is a field that she has always wanted to enter and she believes that it will change her life for the better if only she can get a chance to study it.EBS Inc. will enroll Kidist in a 6 month long placement exam preparatory course starting in November of 2011 at a cost of 200Birr ($12) a month. She will also receive funds to cover her transportation costs and supply costs.
Beneficiary: Eyob
Eyob is 24 years old and the brother of EBS Beneficiary Yared. Eyob lives in the Shola area of Addis Ababa with his mother, three brothers and 4 sisters. Their father has recently passed away and their mother supports the family by selling spices in the market. Eyob is a very active young man, who takes acting classes at the National Theater and has organized the first Father's Day celebrations in Addis Ababa. He would like to now take Piano lessons as he feels it is a way to earn a living while still being creative.
EBS Inc. will enroll Eyob in a one year intensive music program starting in November of 2011 at a cost of 500Birr ($29) a month. He will also receive funds to cover transportation and miscellaneous expenses.
Beneficiary: Sissay
Sissay is a 27 year old young lady that lives in the Tor Hiloch neighborhood of Addis Ababa. She lives with her mother and four younger brothers. Her father has passed away and her mother stays home. They earn income by dividing their home in half and renting to another family. Sissay also works part-time at a cafe which brings in a very small income. She has studied until the 11th grade and has the placement results to continue school if she could afford it. Sissay would like to study Secretarial Science and Office Management as she feel it will open up many opportunities for her in the future.
EBS Inc. will enroll Sissay into St. Mary's College for a three year degree program in Secretarial Science and Office Management starting in November 2011 at a cost of 340birr ($20) a month. Sissay will also receive funds to cover her material and transportation costs.
Beneficiary: Tedros G.
Tedros is a 23 year old young man who lives with his grandmother in the Sar Bet area of Addis Ababa. His mother left Ethiopia to find work and was never heard from again and he has no brothers or sisters. Tedros is a very intelligent young man who finished 12th grade and was entered into Addis Ababa University, Dire Dawa Campus. He returned from college in his first semester after falling severely ill. Tedros would like the opportunity to go back to college to study Accounting, a field he has interest in as well as one he believes will give him a long career.EBS Inc. will enter Tedros into Hope University College for a three year degree program in Accounting at a cost of 450birr ($26) a month, beginning in November 2011. He will also receive funds for transportation and other costs.
Beneficiaries: Yegremachew and Yedneckachew (Adult Vocational Program)
Yednekachew and Yegremachew are brothers who live and work together in the 5-Kilo area of Addis Ababa. They are the younger brothers of EBS Beneficiary Yewubnesh. Both brothers left school in the 9th grade and now work as laborers, laying tile. Yednekachew and Yekdemachew would like to get certified in ceramic tiling so that they can bid on projects themselves and become more than just day laborers.EBS Inc. will enter the brothers into a six month certification program at Soda Technical Training and Building Contractors at a cost of $21 (350Birr) a month each, beginning in October 2011.They will also be given funds to cover their school related expenses.
